MATCH REPORT: Chesham United 2-1 Swindon

A last-minute heartbreaker denied us a point against Chesham at The Meadow.

Kate Bowers struck in the closing embers with a shot from range that squirmed under keeper Sophie Barrett, who otherwise had a superb game, to get the hosts all three points in Sunday’s encounter.

After going behind in the 31st minute through Gemma Fraser’s goal, we responded just before half-time with a goal from Annabelle Colston, but just couldn’t hold on for an impressive away point.

Chesham had the opening couple of chances, both through Fraser, as she first shot over the bar from just inside the box after five minutes and in the tenth minute she headed, again over the bar, from six yards out.

Our first opportunity at the Chesham goal was provided by Ellie Olds shooting over with a close-range opening that was made difficult by a defender that put her under pressure.

Jen Gray had our first shot on target with a looping effort from a fair way out, and the Chesham keeper grabbed it with minimum fuss.

Just after the half-hour mark though, Fraser gave Chesham the lead with a shot from a long way out that dribbled over the line after Barrett came out of her goal to try and close the angle.

We almost equalized immediately when Colston’s shot made it past the keeper but unfortunately the Chesham stopper recovered in time to latch onto the ball just before it crossed the line and Olds could reach it to tap in for 1-1.

Fraser then tested Barrett, but she was equal to it this time and we got our leveler in the nick of time.

Four minutes before the break, Colston made it 1-1 after a corner was headed towards the Chesham goal by one of their own defenders and Colston stuck a leg out to knock it over the line if it wasn’t in already.

Chesham started the second half brighter with Stacie Blackburn having a powerful shot saved comfortably by Barrett and a minute later, Olds struck wide of the post for us.

Arguably our best opportunity of the second half was Helena Diaz-Butcher striking wide of the far post but soon after he had a big let-off after Blackburn lofted a presentable chance over the bar.

In the 67th minute, both keepers made huge saves to somehow keep the score 1-1.

First, Olds’ volley after a floated corner was brilliantly saved by the boot of Chesham keeper Amber Taylor and, on the counter-attack, Barrett was needed to excellently push away a shot by Amina Harif.

Blackburn then hit the post for Chesham before Barrett again came out on top to superbly deny Fraser in a one-on-one when Fraser looked certain to make it 2-1.

Barrett also did so well to win another one-on-one battle, knocking a shot onto the bar and out with her boot, but cruelly the winning goal seconds later just squeezed under her as Chesham claimed the win.
